Product guide
The electric main fire pump is the heart of a fire fighting system. When a sprinkler opens or a hydrant valve is used, the pressure in the pipe falls, the controller senses this, and the pump starts automatically to push a large flow of water to the fire. This 25 HP unit has an electric motor that drives a fire pump, usually a horizontal centrifugal type. The motor runs on a three phase supply and starts through a fire pump controller, which is built for emergency duty. A typical fire pump is designed so that it does not exceed 140% of its rated pressure with no flow, and still delivers at least 65% of rated pressure at 150% of rated flow, as NFPA 20 expects. The rated flow and pressure of your pump depend on the model, so match them to your system design. The electric pump is the main pump, and a diesel pump or a generator is usually used as a backup.
A fire pump is chosen by flow and pressure, not by horsepower alone. Your designer will calculate the flow and pressure the system needs, and then pick a pump that meets those numbers. Also think about the water source, the suction pipe and the power supply, as a pump is only useful if it has water and power when it is needed.
What is the flow rate of a 25 HP fire pump?
It depends on the model and the pressure. Check the data plate.
Does it start automatically?
Yes, through its controller, when pressure falls.
Do I need a backup?
Most systems add a diesel pump or a generator.
Do I need a jockey pump?
Usually yes, to avoid frequent starts.
Which standard applies?
Fire pump systems usually follow NFPA 20 and local rules.
