Product guide
An addressable smoke detector is an intelligent detector that has its own address on a fire alarm loop. When it senses smoke, the panel shows the exact detector, such as “Third Floor, Corridor B”, so staff and firefighters can go straight to the right place. The detectors are wired on a 2-wire loop that provides both power and communication, so the cable is simple. Each detector reports its status to the panel all the time, including its sensitivity and a dirty detector warning, which helps with maintenance. You set the address on the detector, normally with a DIP switch or a programmer, and the panel stores it. Addressable detectors are used in hotels, hospitals, malls, offices and large factories. An important point is that detectors and panels are brand specific, because each brand has its own protocol, so you must choose the detector that matches your panel.
Addressable systems use a digital language between the panel and each device. If the detector speaks a different language from the panel, the panel will not see it. Before you buy, check the panel brand and model, and then pick a detector that is listed for that panel.
What is the difference between addressable and conventional?
An addressable detector reports its own address, so the panel shows its exact location.
Can I use it with any addressable panel?
No. Use a detector made for your panel’s protocol.
How is the address set?
On the detector, normally with DIP switches or a programmer.
Does it need separate power wires?
No. The loop gives both power and data.
What does a dirty detector warning mean?
The panel is telling you that the detector needs cleaning.
Can I mix other devices on the loop?
Yes, such as call points and sounders, if they use the same protocol.
