Product guide
A diesel engine fire pump is the backup for the electric main fire pump. Fires often come with power failures, and a pump that needs electricity may stop just when it is needed. A diesel pump does not depend on the grid, because the engine drives the pump directly, and it can run as long as it has fuel. This 30 HP unit pairs a diesel engine with a fire pump on a common base. The engine starts automatically from batteries when the controller senses a drop in pressure, and the pump pushes water into the fire system. A fire pump engine normally has two battery sets, so if one fails, the other can start the engine. Standards such as NFPA 20 also ask for a fuel tank of at least one gallon per horsepower, plus allowance for expansion and sump volume, so the engine can run for a long time. The engine rating must suit the site’s height and temperature, so tell your supplier where it will be installed.
An electric fire pump depends on the grid or a generator. If both fail, the pump stops. A diesel engine pump gives you an independent source of power. That is why fire codes for large or high risk buildings often ask for a diesel pump, or a second power source, in addition to the electric pump.
When does the diesel pump start?
When the pressure falls and the electric pump has not started, or when the power fails.
Why two batteries?
If one battery set fails, the other can still start the engine.
What is the fuel tank size?
Standards ask for at least 1 gallon per HP, plus allowances. Check your unit.
How much water does it deliver?
It depends on the pump model. Check the data plate.
How often should I test it?
Weekly run tests are common. Follow your local rules.
Can it be the only pump?
Some sites use it as the main pump. Ask your designer.
