An optical beam smoke detector protects a large open space with a single beam of light. The detector sends an infrared beam to a reflector, and it watches the signal. When smoke drifts across the beam and blocks part of the light, the detector raises an alarm. This makes it a smart choice for warehouses, atriums, factories, sports halls, airports and other places with high ceilings, where hundreds of spot detectors would be hard to fit and maintain. A typical single ended reflective model protects a range from 5m up to 100m. Beyond 70m, a long range kit with extra reflectors is needed. Typical models allow about 9 to 18 metres between beams on a smooth ceiling, and half of that from a side wall, so one beam can protect a very large floor area. The detector can be adjusted by about 10 degrees in each direction for alignment, and it has several sensitivity levels. It signals a fault if the beam is blocked fully or the alignment shifts.

A beam detector is a line-of-sight device. If the detector and the reflector are not aligned, or if the building moves, the signal drops and the detector shows a fault.
