Product guide
The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S takes the classic, most-used 50mm focal length and pairs it with an f/1.2 maximum aperture, a genuine engineering feat that most manufacturers approach very differently, usually with a noisy, power-hungry ultrasonic motor. Nikon instead built a multi-focus system using two smaller, energy-efficient stepping motors that move separate lens groups, giving fast, quiet and precise autofocus even at this shallow a depth of field, something Nikon calls a first for an f/1.2 lens. Seventeen elements in 15 groups, including two ED and three aspherical pieces, keep large, round bokeh clean with minimal colour fringing at the edges, while Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat work together to suppress ghosting under harsh lighting.

Q1: How is this different from the 50mm f/1.8 S lens?
This f/1.2 version lets in noticeably more light and gives stronger background blur, though it is heavier and more expensive than the f/1.8 lens.
Q2: Is autofocus reliable at such a shallow depth of field?
Yes, Nikon's twin stepping motor system was specifically built to keep focus fast and accurate even at f/1.2, where focus errors would otherwise be very noticeable.
Q3: Does this lens have image stabilisation?
No, it relies on the camera body's in-body stabilisation rather than stabilisation built into the lens.
Q4: What filter size does this lens use?
It uses 82mm filters, the same size as several other high end Nikon Z prime lenses.
