Product guide
The NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S was the first super telephoto zoom Nikon built for the Z mount, covering everything from moderate distance up to serious reach in a single lens. Its most notable engineering feature is Inner Balance Technology, which keeps the lens's centre of gravity within just 3.8mm as it extends from 100mm out to a fully zoomed 400mm, so the balance on a gimbal or handheld grip barely changes even though the barrel physically gets longer. Twenty five elements in 20 groups, including six ED and two Super ED elements, control colour fringing across this demanding zoom range, and built-in Vibration Reduction rated at 5.5 stops helps steady handheld shots at the telephoto end. With Nikon's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, this lens extends to an effective 560mm or 800mm without a meaningful loss of image quality or autofocus points.

Q1: How much reach does this lens gain with a teleconverter?
With the 1.4x teleconverter it reaches 560mm, and with the 2x teleconverter it reaches 800mm, both while keeping full autofocus.
Q2: Is this lens too heavy to carry all day?
At 1,435g with its tripod collar, it is substantial but comparable in weight to Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, so many photographers manage it comfortably with a good strap.
Q3: How close can this lens focus?
It focuses as close as 0.75 metres at the wide end, giving a maximum magnification of 0.38x, useful for closer detail shots too.
Q4: What filter size does this lens use?
It uses 77mm filters, a common size shared with several other Nikon Z telephoto lenses.
